Following the appointment of a new helmsman for Nigerian Telecommuni-cations Plc (NITEL) by Transnational Corporation of Nigeria Plc (Transcorp) barely a week ago, the management has promised that the first national carrier would be transformed within three months.

Group Managing Director, Transcorp, Mr. Tom Iseghohi, who is also the Chairman of NITEL, made the pledge at the Ikoyi Headquarters of the holding company on yesterday while formally introducing the new American managing director.

The conglomerate had named Mr. Kevin Caruso as the new Managing Director of NITEL barely a week ago with a promise that Kevin would use his wealth of experience to propel the subsidiary to profitability.

The NITEL Chairman yesterday assured that with the appointment of the new Managing Director, Nigerians would be able to notice the difference between the new NITEL and the NITEL they knew before.

He said broadband connectivity is very important to the nation building process in any part of the world; stressing that based on this, the management has decided to give it priority such that the efforts taken so far impact positively on the economic and social life of Nigerians. His words: 'broadband connectivity portends a huge opportunity for NITEL. We believe if we get this right it will enable the company to provide telecoms services at high quality and low prices."

The NITEL Chairman promised that the news management in NITEL would be given freedom to operate as the board would ensure that they deploy their expertise to run
