Olympics bound marathoner Alex Malinga is among the athletes expected to spice up the National Athletics Championships that start today at Namboole.

Malinga will be looking to improve his pace when he faces several young runners in the 5000m final this afternoon.

He is expected to come up against a host of local runners, most of them from the highlands of Kapchorwa as he bids to improve his time ahead of the 42.1km marathon set for August 24 in Beijing.

Other Olympics-bound athletes to take part in the championships include world junior silver medallist Benjamin Kiplagat who will compete in the 3000mSC, Justine Bayiga who will be aiming for her 30th national title when she competes in the women's 400m and Geoffrey Kusuro in the 5000m.

Entrance into the stadium will be free for spectators to watch the two-day event.
