Minister of State for Air Transportation, Dr Felix Hyat, yesterday tasked aviation service operators to do something urgently to address shortcomings in ground-handling operations.

The Minister, who gave the charge while declaring open a two-day international workshop on aviation service handling, under the auspices of the International Aviation Handling Association (IAHA), said handling of passengers luggage is becoming more and more problematic in most African airports.

"We are all aware of incidences of poor handling of air traveller's luggage in most airports in Africa. Handling of air passengers luggage has not had the best it deserved, partly because of poor attitude to work by the staff of ground handling companies," he said and described the role of aircraft service operators as very critical to effective operations of the air transport industry.

He said the sector cannot afford to loose sight of the need for passenger comfort and safety. "Within one year, I had come to realise the importance of ground-handling services in the aviation industry. Because of increasing modernisation and passenger's interest in comfort and safety, airline operators are acquiring new fleets and nobody wants his aircraft to be in bad state," he said.

He said the issue is not a matter of engaging in buck-passing, but that the problem of shoddy handling of luggage should be addressed squarely, looking at ways to minimise it, if it cannot be eliminated completely.
