The Police in Kampala on Monday arrested a man of Yemeni origin over impersonation and fraud.
Yasin Muhammad, 44, a resident of Namuwongo, a Kampala suburb, was arrested after he took money from a businessman promising to supply him sugar but failed to do so.
Kampala Extra Police spokesman Simeo Nsubuga told journalists at the Central Police Station that Muhammad struck a deal with Yahaya Abdullah, a businessman, promising to supply him with 35 tonnes of sugar.
According to Nsubuga, Muhammad, who was calling himself Daniel, claimed to be the East African marketing manager of Zanco (UK), a non-existent firm allegedly importing sugar from South Africa.
"He even took the victim to the Uganda Revenue Authority headquarters at Nakawa and showed him sugar from different countries," Nsubuga said.
"They later met at Garden City and Sheraton Hotel and struck a deal."
Muhammad took Abdullah to his lawyer, Suleiman Musoke, who helped them draft an agreement, Nsubuga narrated, adding that Muhammad was paid $23,450 (about sh38m)
However, Muhammad did not show up after the agreed three days in which he was supposed to deliver the sugar.
After a fruitless search, Abdullah reported the matter to the Police, Nsubuga said.
Muhammad was arrested in Kisugu, another suburb, after a trap was set for him with a similar deal.
According to the Police spokesman, Muhammad was wanted on a number of fraud cases.
"He has been using companies like Heritage Oil in Hoima, Cobalt in Kasese and BAT in Arua to con people. He also conned a Makerere University lecturer of $35,000."

According to Nsubuga, Muhammad will be charged with fraud as soon as investigations are complete.
