FIVE people died on the spot after a kombi they were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision with a haulage truck along the Harare-Masvingo Road on Wednesday afternoon.

The accident occurred at around 4pm at a spot adjacent to Charter Grade Farm near Beatrice and is believed to have been caused by a cloud of smoke from a veldfire along the highway which obstructed the driver.

Police spokesperson Chief Superinte-ndent Oliver Mandipaka said preliminary investigations indicated that the Sabot Carriers haulage truck collided with the Masvingo-bound Toyota Hiace after the smaller vehicle encroached onto the opposite lane owing to poor visibility.

The Hiace driver and his four passengers were crushed to death while the truck driver escaped with minor injuries.

Police have since identified the victims as Standford Makwavarara (36), the driver, Naphapel Mapuro (33), Talonga Joel (27), Christopher Mapota (24) and Taurai Sinos (30) -- all from Harare.
