A 32-year-old Makonde-based policeman was arrested last week for allegedly raping his 14-year-old niece over a period of six months.

Constable Dennis Marima who was based in Makonde District allegedly abused his late brother's daughter everyday since last year when he took her into his custody.

To prevent the girl from spilling the beans, it is alleged that Marima would threaten to send her back to her mother.

The offence is said to have come to light when the teenager told a friend whose father subsequently made a report to the police, leading to Marima's arrest.

Mashonaland West provincial police spokesperson Insp Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest adding that Marima would appear in court soon.

The girl has since been taken to a child protection society for her own safety.
