Goodness International Limited (GIL), in collaboration with Kano State and the Federal Government, is to invest N7 to N8 billion in municipal solid waste facility project, a project considered to be the largest of its kind in the history of the state.

Speaking to our correspondent in Kano, the managing director of the company, Mr Kassem El Husseini, said that the benefits of the project are cleanliness of the city, provision of employment opportunities and local production of organic compost.

The company's managing director stated that the project's stages are minimizing of the total solid waste to landfill, reutilization of recycled matter, utilization of the produced biogas and production of nitrogen-enriched fertilizer.

He explained that organic compost is currently being imported into the country at higher prices, saying that they will operate by gathering the wastes generated daily and treat it with a state of the art facilities, which will produce the compost.

"The organic compost will benefit the land and the vegetation without nurturing them with unhealthy chemicals that are absorbed by the vegetation," said he.

The managing director said that when the project takes off, Kano will be rid of waste, which, according to him, is a breeding ground for bacteria and mosquitoes adding that when garbage is out of sight, spread of some airborne diseases will also reduced.

Mr El Hussein, however, said that they will use the latest technology of international standard, adding that when the company starts with the implementation of a 'cleaning' plan in a few weeks, Kano people will start perceiving the positive impact of the project.

He explained that the determination of the federal and state governments towards this direction will give birth to a healthy environment which the people of the state crave for, saying that sanitary environment is what any serious government is desirous to have for its people.
