Katsina — Katsina State House of Assembly has attributed the increasing rate of accidents along Katsina highways to the nonchallant attitude of construction firms that indiscriminately dig up holes and fail to fill them on time as well as failure to put caution signs while undertaking repair works on the roads.
The House passed a unanimous resolution calling on the construction firms to henceforth desist from indiscriminate cutting of potholes without filling it and to also put warning signals for motorists of the impending dangers wherever they are undertaking repairs.
The two major highways of Katsina - Kano road and Katsina-Kankara road are presently filled with potholes dug without filling as a result of repair works undertaken by some construction firms for the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA).
The situation led to various accidents with loss of lives and property.
Only recently, eleven cars somersaulted at a sharp bend in Dutsinma local government as a result of the failure of a construction firm to notify motorists of the impending danger of the gravels they spread in the area, three people lost their lives on the spot.
Sponsoring the motion for a call of caution on construction firms, the member representing Bindawa local government, Hon Sirajo Sani Bindawa, drew the attention of the House to the spate of accidents recorded along the major highways which he said led to loss of lives and properties.
