Nigeria: FG to Host Africa's Confernce On Housing

Nigeria will play host to the minister in charge of Housing and Urban Development in the continent of Africa.

According to the chairman planning committee, Minister of State, Environment, Housing and Urban Development, Chief Chuka Odom, the conference scheduled for July 28 - 30, 2008 at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja , will be declared open by President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.

The African Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development (AMCHUD) was established in January, 2005 by African ministers against the backdrop of concerns for rising urbanization and poverty.

The main objective of the conference, is to provide a common plat-form for African ministers in charge of housing and urban development to articulate and pursue joint interest in addressing issues in the sector and to enable them speak with one voice during regional and international meetings.

Chief Odom, added that the vision of AMCHUD II is to serve as a consultative mechanism for the promotion of sustainable development of human settlements in Africa, while its mission is to develop, facilitate and co-ordinate a common African position on issues of sustainable urban development and human settlement in Africa.

The theme of the conference is "Towards MDG Goal 7, Target II; overcoming the Finance and Resources Challenges for Housing and urban Development"; while sub themes will cover issues of affordable housing provision, slum upgrading and prevention, infrastructure development, improved urban performance, urban development amongst others.

The conference apart from the opening ceremony will feature exhibition, gala night and excursion.
