The Labour Party in Edo yesterday criticised the Federal Government for not resolving the issues involved in the ongoing nationwide strike by teachers.

This was contained in a statement issued in Benin and signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the LP, Mr John Ogbeide and Mr Adams Aliu, respectively.

The statement alleged that the Federal Government was not showing any seriousness in resolving the four-week old teachers' strike called by the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT).

Members of the NUT embarked on the action to press their demand for the implementation of the proposed Teachers Salary Scale (TSS).

The statement also condemned what they described as the attempts by the Federal Government to pass the burden of responsibility to the state governments.

It said the Federal Government had a responsibility to implement the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) reached between former President Olusegun Obasanjo's administration and the leadership of the NUT.

It urged stakeholders in the education sector to make the necessary efforts to prevail on the government to respond positively to the demands of the striking teachers.

The statement said the strike and the attendant idleness of pupils and students could have negative effects on then, who could become social miscreants unless decisive steps were taken to address the issue.

It called on the various bodies entrusted with the responsibilities of conducting examinations like the National Examination Council (NECO), WAEC and JAMB, to organise their examinations.

It would be recalled that both WAEC and NECO had announced the indefinite postponement of their examinations because of the strike.
