The Federal Government has set aside over N30billion naira for the provision of 2400 tractors for medium and large scale farmers in the country, saying 600 will be provided in the first quarter while the rest will be provided on yearly basis within the life span of the president administration.

The senate committee chairman on Agriculture and Rural development, Senator Tawau Umbi Wada who disclosed this in Jigawa yesterday, during a courtesy visit to government House, said the project is to gradually move the nation's from manual to mechanize farming system, said it is a deliberate move to improve the agricultural sector in the country.

Senator Wada who is representing Gombe South senatorial area also explained that the programme is designed to be a Private Partnership programme, whereby the federal government will provide 30percent of the funds as subsidy to benefiting farmers while rest will be funded by private partnership participation.

Said he "The tractors will be purchased and leased to cooperative societies across the country, after which they will pay back within four years. It is not going to be business as usual because private partners who have their equity will follow it to its logical conclusion".

According to him, government has realized that there are limited number tractors in the country, which means the nation cannot go anywhere in agricultural development without adopting mechanize farming system, and so because the cost of tractors are high we decided to purchase and lease them out to farmers. He then commended Jigawa State government for adopting the work bulk loan programmes for small scale farmers.

Describing it as very laudable, ' it is a way of mechanizing agriculture, the federal government want to compliment that by proving tractor to middle and large scale farmers'.

He also disclosed that the federal government has set aside N80billion naira for development of agriculture out of natural resources funds reserves, adding that the fund is to also help in improving the agricultural out of the nation.
