Traditional and religious leaders have been advised to make concrete contributions to reproductive health and family planning programmes and advance the rights of women to promote the well being of families and communities.

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a conference on the role of traditional/religious leaders on reduction of maternal mortality and survival of women organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNPF) and the Network of African Islamic Organizations on Population Development (NAIOPD) which took place in Sokoto recently.

The communiqué pledged to support national and international communities to ensure the implementation of global conference agreements in order to reduce maternal mortality rate and achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

It also urged governments, international agencies and NGOs, philanthropists and the organized private sector to support traditional and religious leaders in their efforts at enhancing the survival of women and reducing the current unacceptable high maternal mortality rate in the region.
