Bourke Street in Sunnyside, Pretoria, will be closed to motorists from 4 August as construction for the Gautrain continues in the area.

The Bombela Concession Company construction team will be preparing to extend an overpass bridge that will eventually cross over the Gautrain alignment.

According to Bombela spokesperson, Kelebogile Machaka, the street will be closed until December to allow for a construction site for both the South African Rail Commuter Corporation (SARCC) and the Gautrain Rapid Rail alignments.

Ms Machaka said upon completion, the bridge will serve as an overpass carrying traffic across the South African Rail Commuter Corporation (SARCC) and Gautrain Rapid Rail alignments.

"We want to inform motorists that Bourke Street will be closed to traffic from 4 August until December, to allow for the establishment of a construction site on either side of the SARCC tracks on Bourke Street," she said.

According to the spokesperson, the construction site will therefore incorporate the north and south sides of the bridge.

The traffic currently using Bourke Street as an overpass link between Walker and Berea Streets will in future use Cilliers Street. Access will be maintained for residents only.

Gautrain urges motorists to take note of the temporary signage and alternate routes during the period of the temporary closure.

Residents are also advised to be vigilant of construction vehicles that will also be using the road.
