Ghana: Accra, Ho Poly Graduates in Limbo

Students who completed Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes at the Accra and Ho Polytechnics in 2007 cannot have their results and certificates until later this year. And their hunts for jobs appear to be in jeopardy.

The two polytechnics failed to meet the deadline set for the submission of data which the National Board for Professional and Technician Examinations (NABPTEX) needed for the preparation of certificates.

Public Agenda has gathered that "Ho Polytechnic could not meet the April deadline and authorities there had subsequently failed to make attempts to forward the necessary data to the NABPTEX."

On the other hand, Accra Polytechnic had forwarded the required data, albeit too late. And NABPTEX would work on those candidates later.

In an interview, Mr Ben Antwi-Boasiako, Executive Secretary of NABPTEX, expressed disappointment at the behavior of the two institutions, especially Ho Polytechnic. He said the Ho Polytechnic was now synonymous with delays in the submission of data needed for issuance of results and certificates.

Previously, Ho Polytechnic failed to meet the May 2007 deadline set for the submission of data prior to the collation of 2006 HND results and issuance of certificates.

The procedure is that each of the 10 Polytechnics across the country sets its own questions and dates for examinations but the NABPTEX moderates to ensure that questions conform to standards and that they are uniform with the other institutions. The Polytechnics are then required to submit their marked scripts to NABPTEX for verification before the results are released along with the certificates awarded.

Meanwhile, results and certificates for candidates of Kumasi, Koforidua, Cape Coast, Takoradi, Sunyani, Tamale, Bolgatanga and Wa Polytechnics have been released by NABPTEX, the Executive Secretary said.

Fifty-three (53) candidates, representing approximately one percent (1%) of the 5,377 candidates from the 8 Polytechnics obtained first-class while 1,949 candidates, representing 36.2% obtained second class upper. Another 2,271 constituting 42.2% secured second class lower honours and 150 candidates, representing 2.8% had ordinary passes.

Overall, 4,423 (82.3%) of the candidates received awards while 954 (17.7%) received no awards.

Mr. Antwi-Boasiako said candidates who were not awarded certificates included "those who could not submit their project works, those still undergoing training in some courses and others who failed some of their courses."

He was hesitant to compare the 2007 results with those of 2006 and 2005 for a number of reasons.

For instance, in 2005, NABPTEX didn't have HND candidates from Bolgatanga and Wa Polytechnics. Their pioneers joined in 2006. Again this year, only results from eight polytechnics were available.
