Windhoek — The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has once again come to the fore to support efforts by the two collective management organisations, the Namibia Reproduction Rights Organisation (NAMRRO) and the Namibian Society of Composers and Authors of Music (NASCAM), in the fight against piracy and counterfeit activities in Namibia.
NAMRRO's Chief Executive Officer, Moses Moses, announced this in a press release.
"The UN body has teamed up with the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (MICT) another two sympathetic international organisations, namely the International Federation for Reproduction Rights Organisations (IFRRO) based in Belgium and the Confederation of International Societies of Authors and Composers (CISAC) based in Paris, France, to provide funding and expertise for a two-day training workshop on piracy and counterfeiting to be held at the Protea Hotel in Walvis Bay from 18 - 19 August 2008," Moses said.
He said law enforcement officials from the Namibian Police, Customs and Excise and copyright organisations are bound to benefit a great deal from the workshop. Representatives of local record labels and music retailers, book writers, publishers and retailers and institutions of higher learning have also been invited.
The training workshop, which would be officially opened by the Governor of Erongo Region, Samuel Nuyoma, will discuss among other things:
"Resource persons from as far Germany, Malawi, South Africa and Zimbabwe will address the gathering on their respective areas of competence. Selected Namibian high-ranking officials in the intellectual property institutions of Government will also address the gathering by giving overviews on relevant legislations, challenges and cooperation between them and law enforcement institutions in the fight against piracy and counterfeiting in Namibia," he said.
