Youth from parts of Kenya and neighbouring South Sudan are taking part in an art festival organized by two associations in collaboration with the north-western Diocese of Lodwar.
The 'Nomadic Art Festival', an initiative of Asociacion Akipi from Spain and Anidan, an NGO in Lamu, Kenya, has attracted some 80 participants, mostly out-of-school youth. Christian and Muslim youth are in attendance. The event, at Bishop Mahon Centre, Lodwar, opened on Tuesday and closes Saturday.
Besides an art exhibition, the youth are being exposed to the workings of various forms of the mass media. Organizers say the objective of the festival is to create an opportunity for youth to exchange experiences and showcase artistic talent.
In arid and neglected Lodwar, many youth are jobless and waste their time drinking cheap alcohol and chewing the narcotic Miraa or Khat. There is little government or private investment to inspire greater ambitions.
According to Carlos Rodrigo Quiros of Bishop Mahon Centre, youths in the area fall into two groups. "Some are very active and others are just idling around, waiting for things to happen to them instead of taking initiative to engage in some income generating activity".
