Mozambique: Tender for Building of Silos Launched

25 July 2008

Maputo — The Mozambican Ministry of Industry and Trade has launched a public tender for the building of silos, as part of the government's 2008/2011 Food Production Action Plan.

The tender, that is to run for the next three months, aims at selecting companies to rehabilitate or build silos and warehouses across the country. The government's plan is to build silos with a capacity for 60,000 tonnes of assorted foodstuffs.

During the first stage it is expected to invest about 10 million US dollars for this undertaking in the northern provinces of Niassa and Nampula, and in Zambezia and Manica in the centre of the country.

The idea is to establish appropriate conditions for storing grain in those provinces with the greatest production capacity, while establishing a secure and permanent market that will stimulate increased production and productivity.

The silos are also supposed to stabilize grain prices on the domestic market, and to minimize the impact of international food crises.

A second phase will begin in 2009, to build silos in Gaza, Tete and Cabo Delgado provinces. The total amount to be spent has not yet been estimated, and nor has the government given a figure for the total number of silos to be built.

The government approved the Food Production Action Plan in June, and has presented it to the private sector in an attempt to secure private investment in the various areas covered.
