Japan has pledged 88,400 US dollars to finance the construction of a health post at Ambrosio, in Boane district, about 30 kilometres west of Maputo.

An agreement on this grant was signed in Maputo on Friday between Domingos Cossa, executive director of the Mozambican NGO, FUCON ("Futuro conjunto" - Joint Future) and Japanese ambassador Tatsuya Miki.

The new health unit will include a maternity unit, a pharmacy, and a house for the nurse. The ambassador said at the signing ceremony that preliminary research showed that the health post will benefit 5,000 people directly and 15,000 indirectly.

"We are sure that this project will help reduce the suffering of people who travel long distances in search of medical care, and will be a fundamental step in consolidating relations between the Japanese and Mozambican peoples", claimed Miki.

Cossa said that the Ambrosio health post will deal with questions of mother and child care and malaria treatment. It will also complement efforts undertaken by HIV/AIDS activists and mobile HIV testing units in Boane and the nearby districts of Namaacha and Catembe.
