The House of Representatives Committee on Ethics and Privileges said it has not received any signal from the House leadership to commence the investigation into an alleged N100 million bribe offered to the members of the Power and Steel Committee.

The Power and Steel Committee was probing billions expended by the Federal Government on the power sector from 1999 to 2003.

The Speaker Dimeji Bankole on Wednesday said that allegation of bribery be investigated by the Ethics and Privilege Committee but Mrs Florence Akinwale, chairman of the committee, said they were not given any directive.

Also, speaking to journalists in Abuja yesterday, a member of the House Committee on Power and Steel, Mr Muraino Ajibola (PDP, Oyo) said the allegation over the bribe in Port Harcourt was unfounded.

He condemned the allegations and vowed to take appropriate actions to protect his name and that of the committee members.

Rep. Ajibola said he was not surprised by the allegation because some people will always want to gang up against good intentions.

"We do our job to the best of our abilities and I assure all Nigerians that there is no iota of truth in all that they have said and that it will not deter us from bringing our report nor will it deter us from taking appropriate action on those who are found to have collected Nigerian money without doing the appropriate job," he said

He added that the bribery allegations were being sponsored by some drowning contractors who know that they might be indicted by the committee report when submitted.
