The Federal Government has been blamed for not exibiting the political will to implement policies that will resolve the problems currently confronting the education sector.
House committee chairman on Education, Farouk Lawan said a lot of good policies are already in place which if implemented would change the face of the education sector, but lamented that the government has not shown enough commitment to addressing the issues.
Farouk lawan was speaking at a forum organized by the Commonwealth Education Fund (CEF) to proffer ways of resolving the challenges in the sector.
He stressed that as a country, what is desperately needed are individuals who have renewed commitment to education, and are willing to make the necessary sacrifices to see things done right.
He argued that government lacked the will to put into action, policies that can prefer genuine change in the country which according to him has also robbed the nation of the will to act.
Speaking on the issues of funding, which he said was very fundamental, Lawan lamented that though funds were made available they were not used judiciously, neither are they deployed towards priority areas.
He said the system was in dire need of facilities as most schools were ill equipped, teachers were demoralized, and parents prefer to send their children to hawk rather than go to school.
He said, 'we can not continue to throw away money, when education needs it, most of the issues bedeviling education and the country at large can be resolved if priority is given to education.
Lawan said, "any country that is serious about development and getting it right must start with education, it is the backbone of every civilized society. For 9 years we have had democracy, but we have very little to show for it, many children are still out of school".

Earlier the Senior Special Assistant to the president on the MDGs, Amina Ibrahim argued that the government could not be held solely responsible for all the problems associated with the education sector.
