Eritrea: Regional Youth Conference Concludes Adopting Declaration

Asmara — The Regional Youth Conference on Peace and Development concluded yesterday adopting the "Asmara Declaration." The 3-day conference organized by the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students (NUEYS) focusing on the role and contribution of youths in promoting peace in the Horn of Africa was held at Hotel Intercontinental Asmara.

In the conference that was attended by youths from Eritrea, Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and others, study papers on the role and challenges of the youth, as well as the causes of conflict and challenges as regards promoting peace and development in the region were presented. Besides, extensive discussion was conducted on ways of creating conducive ground for defining their vision so as to strengthen the relations and coordination of youths, and thereby enable them to play active role in promoting peace.

The participants adopted a number of resolutions and recommendations in the Asmara Declaration, including respect to sovereignty and territorial integrity, the need to resolve internal problems of countries domestically, stressing that the Somali issue could not be resolved without the withdrawal of the invading Ethiopian forces and that the Somali people should be given the chance to resolve their issues themselves. Moreover, the resolutions and recommendations emphasize the need to uphold agreements signed and that Ethiopia should withdraw from the occupied sovereign Eritrean territories, as well as stressing the need for international organizations to refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of states.
