Kampala — SIXTEEN people died and over 100 sustained serious injuries in five road accidents over the weekend.
Five passengers aboard a Nairobi-bound Akamba bus died at Namungodi, five kilometres to Busia town, when their vehicle hit a tree and overturned several times.
A total of 50 people were seriously injured as they were travelling to Kenya.
They were rushed to Busia Health Centre and Busia-Kenya Hospital.
About 30 passengers, who escaped unhurt, boarded another bus and travelled to Kenya.
The Police could not identify the dead.
The survivors said the driver, only identified as Kamiti, asked them to pray when he lost control of the bus.
Another four perished in three accidents in Kabarole district.
Six people died on the spot and another died in Kabale Hospital on Saturday when their 60-seater Gateway coach crashed into a house at Bukinda Trading Centre.
The bus from Kisoro district was heading to Kampala.
The Kabale Police chief, Godfrey Biryomumaisho, identified the dead as Jacqueline Niwamanya and her two daughters Daisy and Prince (girls).
Others were Amon Agumenaitwe of Mbarara and Sgt. Robert Tukwasibwe, a Police detective who works at Old Kampala Police Station.
The other two could not be identified by press time.
Fifty-three passengers, including the driver, Masudi Sudi, were admitted at Kabale Hospital.
The majority of them had broken limbs and deep cuts.
The 6:00am incident occurred when the driver, Sudi, lost control and crashed the bus into the house.
The chairman of Bukinda trading centre, Steven Byamugisha, said the occupants of the house were not at home by the time of the accident.
In Kabarole, a Fuso truck skidded off the road and rolled several times, killing its driver identified as Joseph Mwesigye.
The truck, which was ferrying merchandise from Kampala to Kasese, crashed at Mugusu on Saturday.
Another lorry transporting raw materials from Hima Cement in Kasese also crashed at Rubona.
The driver of the truck rammed into a saloon car, killing two of its four occupants. The deceased were identified as Hadija Kanyunyuzi and Rutagarama.
The other two were admitted in Buhinga Hospital. In Kijura sub-county in Kabarole, an unidentified man was knocked by a tractor.
The Police blamed all the five accidents on speeding.
