Nigeria: Bakassi Crises - France Pledges Aid to Fight Piracy

Lagos — After three ambush attacks by Nigerian pirate rebels in the disputed oil rich Bakassi peninsular that left Cameroon with considerable casualties, "the Yaounde authorities are feeling frustrated over this new and growing menace", reports the Herald newspaper in its Friday issue. And that Yaounde authorities were feeling helpless after three humiliating attacts of the Cameroon military.

Whatever the case, France has pledged to come to rescue. In response to a request by the government, France will offer Cameroon as much military support as it will take to keep pirate activity within Bakassi waters at bay.
