Monrovia — The Information and Broadcasting Committee of the House of Representatives will on today begin public hearings on three draft media laws pending before the legislature.
The hearings begin at noon in the Joint Assembly Hall of the Capitol.
The acts were submitted to the Legislature early this year by the Liberia Media Law and Policy Reform Working Group, and are aimed at improving the media situation in the country.
According to a release, today's deliberations will consider an Act to establish an Independent Broadcast Regulatory Body in Liberia, and will hear expert opinions from key individuals in society, including Liberia Telecommunication Authority Commissioner, Professor Lamini Waritay and University of Liberia Mass Communication Department Chairman, Joe Mulbah.
The Legislative Committee will also hear from Post & Telecommunications Minister Jeremiah Sulunteh, Catholic Justice and Peace Commission Director Augustine Toe and renowned broadcaster Aaron Kollie of the Infinity Broadcasting Corporation (Power FM/TV).
The Media Law Working Group was organized in 2003 by a consortium of international media development and freedom of expression organizations, in collaboration with the Government of Liberia and local media practitioners and organizations with an aim of improving the work of media in the country.
The hearings will continue on Friday on the draft Freedom of Information Law and an Act to transform the Liberia Broadcasting System into a Public Service Broadcaster.
