Nigeria: Beninois Arraigned Over N1.8 Million Theft

A Beninois, Mr. Aholou Parfait Tobi, was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja High Court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly stealing N1.8 million.

The money was said to belong to one Mr. Taofik Balogun.

When the two-count charge was read to Tobi through a French interpreter, Mrs. Olajumoke Onuoha, the suspect pleaded not guilty.

According to the particulars of the alleged offence, Tobi and Femi (still at large) on or about March 25, 2008 at Lagos, within the Ikeja Judicial Division with intent to defraud, conspired to commit felony to wit: stole the sum of one million, seven hundred and eighty four thousand, eight hundred and ninety five naira (N1,784,895) property of Mr. Taofik Balogun and Mrs. Iyabo Balogun conspiracy to steal contrary to section 516 of the criminal code cap C17, Vol. 2, laws of Lagos State.

Tobi was not represented by a counsel but Mr. G.O Adebola appeared for the EFCC, presiding judge, Justice Joseph Oyewole of Ikeja High Court however, adjourned till October 20 for trial and asked that the defendant be remanded in prison custody.
