Nigeria: Commissioner Tasks Information Officers On Avian Influenza

An appeal has been made to information officers to rise up to their responsibilities as communicators in the fight against the scourge of Avian Influenza in the country.

The Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr. Nuhu Gagara, made this call in Jos, Plateau State capital, at a workshop and orientation organised for the local government communication desk officers on Avian Influenza in Plateau State.

Speaking through the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Ezekiel Dalyop, the commissioner told the participants to make best use of what would come out of the workshop .He said the event was aimed at educating , informing and enlightening them on the control of the disease in the country.

He noted that as information personnel ,it was important for them to be acquainted with how best the disease could be controlled, contained as well as eliminated in the country, saying false information in this regard could create apprehension among poultry farmers.

It would be recalled that the Avian Influenza, popularly known as Bird Flu, began to spread in Nigeria in February 2006, affecting mostly poultries which became human virus with the capacity to cause human pandemic and mass death.

The commissoiner, however, stressed the significance of the need to get Nigeria out of the problem,saying it would preserve the nation's economy.
