Nigeria: Lazy Contractors to Face Prosecution

Contractors handling various development projects in Ebonyi State have been warned to complete their contracts on schedule or risk being prosecuted in the court of law.

Ebonyi State Governor, Chief Martin Elechi, issued this stern warning to government contractors in the state when National Assembly members from the state paid him a courtesy visit at the government House, Abakaliki.

Chief Elechi, who disclosed that the inability of some contractors to complete their job on schedule was one of the greatest problems currently facing the state government on its developmental strides, said that the time had come to prove to contractors who were not ready to keep to the terms of their contracts that they were dancing "makossa" on a banana peel.

He confirmed that there had been so much distraction in the state ever since he assumed office, most of which were communal clashes, pointing out that " it is easier to start a fight but no one can accurately say the duration, direction or how it will end".

Chief Elechi further stated that trouble makers in the state had now read the hand writing on the wall and were fully aware that government was not merely bragging or threatening, adding that at his age, 67 years, why should he be afraid of death.

On his appeal court electoral victory, he said "there was no cause to feel particularly happy because for me to be Martin Elechi is more important than being a governor".

Furthermore, he stressed that he had no ill will against those who tried to make things impossible for him, saying that if he were not a governor, he would still have other things to do, that at least, he needed rest.

But that since it was the wish of the people that he should be on the saddle, he would not want their desire to be rubbished.

Earlier, the leader of the National Assembly members from Ebonyi State, Senator Ali Ucha, explained they were in the state to congratulate Governor Elechi on his appeal court electoral victory and to appreciate the governor for the several roads and bridges and other development projects his government initiated.
