The newly appointed Executive Chairman of Kaduna State Board of Internal Revenue, Alhaji Ahmed Jibril, has urged Nigerians to imbibe the habit of paying taxes, as another way of assisting the constituted authorities to serve them better.
He made the call while speaking to newsmen in Kaduna recently, saying that the three tiers of government could not totally rely on the monthly statutory allocations alone, but rather diversify sources for internally generated revenue as it was the system in many developed and developing nations the world over.
The chairman then said a situation whereby individuals, businessmen and private enterprises evade taxes does not augur well for the nation's economy, while pointing out that in many countries, tax evasion was a serious offence and as such, Nigeria should fashion out laws to punish offenders.
He also charged motorists, particularly motorcyclists, to register their vehicles to avoid prosecution. "Our officials will soon start operation to check validity of tax papers and other vehicles' licenses. Therefore, all concerned should ensure compliance," Jibril said.
