MEN of the Delta State police command have arrested a staff of Ministry of Health Akwa-Ibom while allegedly conveying sixteen bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp concealed in an ambulance belonging to Akwa-Ibom state government on Benin/Asaba highway.
State police command's spokesman, Mr. Charles Muka, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) who confirmed the arrest in Asaba yesterday said the incident occurred last Sunday.
According to him, the State Anti-Robbery team "arrested one (names withheld), a staff of Ministry of Health Akwa-Ibom state with 16 bags of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp in a Peugeot 504 station wagon ambulance with registration number 8 AKSG 398 property of Akwa-Ibom state at about 0600 hours on 27th July, 2008".
He also added that "the same SARS team Asaba intercepted a Peugeot 504 wagon car the previous day (Saturday) with nine passengers and when the vehicle was searched, four bags of weds suspended to be Indian hemp were recovered from one Private (names withheld), a solider attached to Auchi Military Cantonment.
Both cases he said have been handed over the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA for further investigation," he stated.
Contacted, the State NDLEA Commander, Suleiman Ahmed Ningi told Vanguard in a telephone interview that "the suspect was arrested with 165.7kg with the ambulance", adding that "investigation is on."
