Kampala — THE UPDF has impounded 6,604 animals during an operation to recover illegal guns from the Jie warriors in Kailong sub-county, Kotido district last weekend.
Daniel Edyegu reports that this brings the total number of Jie animals impounded by the UPDF since July, to 17,857.
The UPDF 405 Brigade commander, Lt. Col. David Kabangira, said 21 guns had been recovered from the warriors in the same operation.
"The Jie warriors handed over the guns to their elders who gave them to us. In impounding these animals, the UPDF doesn't intend to deprive the Karimojong of their main source of livelihood, but it's a double strategy to recover both the illegal guns and stolen cattle from other clans."
Kabangira said the animals would be kept in army detachments at Lokitaleabur, Napumpum and the 405 Brigade headquarters in Nakapelimoru.
The UPDf on Monday invited Karamoja leaders to witness the sorting out of the animals.
