Problems of sponsorship bedeviling Nigeria sports may soon become history if feelers from the newly elected national chairman of Nigeria Football Supporters' Club (NFSC), Otunba Yisa Olatunde Bashorun, is anything to go by.
Bashorun briefly after the club's 2008 general elections assured Nigerians "we shall also reach out to other multinational companies and public spirited individuals for sponsors as we are trying to identify other areas of the club's function that need support''.
He in the same breath generously eulogised Global Communication Network (GLO) for its consistent financial commitment "as the sole sponsor of the club's outing and activities for some time now". Moreover, the NFSC under the new leadership is evolving pragmatic programmes through its activities outside the country to prop up the positive image and tourism potentials of Nigeria. This is inspired by the determination and commitment to re-invigorate and re-focus the activities of the club towards enhancing sports, with particular reference to Football in the country.
The supporters club is also poise to re-engineer for optimal productivity as well as "endeavour to institutionalise standard accounting procedures in handling of financial matters of the club" insists confident Basorun.
To this end, "We shall exhibit a very high degree of probity by rendering periodic statement of account at an interval to be decided upon by the Central Working Committee (CWC) of the club, an intention borne out of our firm belief in the process of wide consultation before actions are taken even as we have put down some action steps that are sufficiently potent to take the club to the next level''.
He said: "There shall be a slight modification in the composition, frequency and place of executive and general meetings", as a way of creating room for healthy competition among state chapters of the club just as hosting national executive meetings will be rotated among states in a given geo-political zone.
To eradicate administrative bottlenecks and give the state chapters sense of belonging, the rotational position would involve the appointment of zonal coordinators.
The new executive council would equally place high premium on members welfare in all assignment/competitions, both nationally and internationally, explained the NFSC.
