Damaturu — The Yobe State Pilgrims' Welfare Commission has announced new fares for the 2008 hajj which covers air ticket, accommodation and basic travelling allowance (BTA). The new fare, which is in three categories, showed an increase over what was paid last year.

The Executive Chairman of the Commission, Alhaji Hassan El-Badawy, who announced this while speaking to pressmen in Damaturu, said the hajj seats had been categorised into three classes.

According to him, the minimum fare is N420,500; N450,000; and N510, 000 for the minimum, medium, and maximum classes respectively.

The chairman said the National Hajj Commission (NAHCO) has approved 3,000 seats for Yobe state and appealed to intending pilgrims who deposited money for the 2008 Hajj exercise to settle the balance on time.

El-badawy lamented that the Hajj fare was increased because of hike in the prices of accommodation in Makka and Madina as well as air tickets.

He said last year each pilgrim paid 1,500 Saudi riyals for accommodation but, regretfully, that this year, the same space would cost a pilgrim 2,100 Saudi riyals.

According to El-badawy, the Minimum BTA is US$750, medium US$1000, and maximum US$1,500.

"In Yobe state, we are working seriously to ensure a successful exercise this year because we have already secured good accommodation for our people in both Makka and Madina" the chairman assured. He said the closing date for the collection of the hajj fares was 15 August, 2008.
