Nigeria: Polio - Emir Lauds Yar'Adua

President Umaru Musa yar'adua has been commended for the renewed interest shown towards eradication of polio in the country.

The Emir of Anka who is also chairman, Zamfara State Council of Chiefs, Alhaji Muhammadu Attahiru Ahmed Anka, made the commendation while receiving members of the Federal Task Force on Polio Eradication, that paid him a courtesy call in his palace.

The emir applauded the president and the Federal Ministry of Health for setting up the Task Force adding that it showed that government was now seriously tackling the issue.

He urged Yar'adua to be personally involved in the drive to stamp out this ailment which has devastated many families.

The emir advised the task force headed by Dr A. Nasidi, and Peter Igho, in charge of communications to work in harmony with people at the local level by effectively utilizing them because they could easily reach the people.

Anka promised to mobilise his subjects to embrace the federal government's campaign to rid the nation of this dreaded disease.

The task force also visited Sokoto State to monitor the polio immunization exercise in three different wards. The team also was in Dangeshini, Naghuche, where several heads of the communities trooped out to embrace the immunization exercise with members of their communities.

A mini football fiesta was organised with the local football teams bearing the names of the two task force members, Team Nasidi and Team Peter. A cash trophy was donated before the departure of the task force.

A forthnight ago, the newly inaugrated Federal Task Force on Polio Eradication undertook extensive monitoring exercise in Kaduna, Bauchi and Kano States.
