Nigeria: Minister Explains Electricity Rationing

Nuruddeen M. Abdallah

3 August 2008

The Minister of State for Energy (Power), Hajiya Fatima Balaraba Ibrahim has attributed the Federal Government recent decision to ration the supply of electricity to shortage of gas supply. She added that the poner supply drastically dropped in the last two months because of the low water level at the hydro plants.

Hajiya Balaraba said in an interview with Sunday Trust, that due to the short supply of gas from Chevron, most of the hydro stations were thereby overworked, hence the drop in electricity supply to different parts of the country.

From last month, the Minister said, the situation has improved with the stabilization of gas supply, even though there was system collapse in most of the stations. She therefore assured Nigerians to bear with the rationing, as the government is working round the clock to improve the situation.
