ECOWAS is sending its emergency response team to Togo to evaluate the damage caused by devastating floods that have displaced many people and washed away roads and bridges.

The team arrives the country today, and would during the visit hold discussions with officials of Togo, including those responsible for emergency response in the country.

It will also visit some of the affected areas during the assessment mission that will enable the commission to determine the relief to be provided and how to coordinate support with the international community

According to reports, among the bridges washed away include the one linking the country with neighbouring Burkina Faso.

The president of the commission, Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas, has already sent a letter of sympathy to President Faure Gnassingbe of Togo. In it, he said "the commission received with great concern the report of the devastation caused by the flood leading to the displacement of hundreds of people".

"I am particularly worried by the nature and scope of the recent flooding especially as I recall that a similar disaster affected our Togolese brothers and sisters last year."

He pledged that ECOWAS would provide support to the country in all its efforts geared towards providing succour to the affected citizens.
