Cape Coast — Mechanics in Cape Coast heaved a sigh of relief when the Ministry of Trade announced to the mechanics of the Siwdu Fitting shops that plans were under way to provide them with basic infrastructure to facilitate their work.
The project which is under the auspices of the Ministry of Trade, Industries seeks to provide accessible road to the Cape Coast Pedu Junction Highway.
Also the garages will benefit from facilities like pipe borne water, a clinic toilets and urinals, security services and also lighting facilities.
Speaking at the launch at the garages in Cape Coast, the regional trade officer of the ministry, Mr. Sintim Barima Asare explained that the project forms part of directives by government to provide support to small industries to boost productivity.
He explained that the policy not only seeks to raise the standard of living of the mechanics in the regional capital, but also for the youth of the town who will be employed by Zoomlion.
He explained that training services would also be provided for the youth of the town including the garages to boost their knowledge base especially in the handling of heavy duty equipments just as Zoomlion did for the 'Zoom Captains' in Accra.
He said the ministry has contracted Zoomlion as the main implementers of the programme since the company has proved that it has what it takes to put up structures, aside sound job training for the youth.
Mrs. Freda Prempeh, the project Coordinator of Zoomlion assured mechanics and Oguaaman that just as they have been able to undertake similar projects for market women and mechanics at Mankessim, they would complete the rest of the project within the shortest possible time.
"We have a proven track record, expertise, logistics and what ever it takes to complete the project and indeed we hope to do our best in addressing the pressing needs of the fitters in Cape Coast", he added.
The mechanics also appealed to government to establish a training centre in Cape Coast to equip the youth with the relevant knowledge in repairing vehicles.
