Police also recovered an M-56 riffle from the bandits, all ex-convicts.
Copperbelt police commanding officer, Antoneil Mutentwa confirmed the incident in an interview yesterday.
Mr Mutentwa said police received a report on Saturday that some bandits planned to trail a businessman with the aim of robbing him.
"It was after getting this information that the officers also decided to trail the bandits but upon reaching Buchi, the bandits opened fire and this is how they made their position known. All of them are ex-convicts," Mr Mutentwa said.
He said a heavy exchange of fire ensued before police finally gunned down the trio.
Mr Mutentwa, who could not name the businessman, identified the bandits as Noel Kape, Reuben Kanyimbi and the third one only identified as Chinyemba.
And ZANIS reports that police in Choma have arrested four teenage boys in connection with a spate of robberies in the district and recovered stolen household property worth millions of Kwacha.
The recovered items include 11 television sets, DVD players, furniture and assorted household goods believed to have been stolen from Mochipapa, Riverside and Macha residential areas.
Choma district police officer commanding, Jackson Simfukwe said the four boys who are currently in police custody are aged between 13 and 15 years.
