Zambia: ECZ Initiative Helps Reduce Conflicts

The establishment of the electoral commission political liaison committee has assisted in the reduction of conflicts and misunderstanding with political parties, Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) public relations manager Cris Akufuna has said.
Mr Akufuna said in an interview at the Zambia Agricultural and Commercial show that the establishment of the committee has minimised misunderstanding and conflicts that arose in the past as a result of lack of exchange of information.
He said the commission was committed to working with various stakeholders, which included different political parties and other stakeholders in addressing some issues that could result in conflict.
"The establishment of the conflict management committees between ourselves and political parties has tremendously minimised the conflicts that arose in the past," he said.
He said the commission would also continue with voters educations in various parts of the country to educate the public on their rights as regards voting.
Mr Akufuna said it was important that the public was educated on their rights to vote so as enable them make a decision that would be for their benefit.
Mr Akufuna paid tribute to show goers who took time to visit and ask questions at the ECZ stand regarding elections.
He said some of the people who visited were interested in checking if their names were still appearing on the 2006 voters roll used in the presidential and general elections.
