Nigeria: Sponsorship Deal - Globacom Hails NFF's Clarification

5 August 2008

Lagos — Globacom Limited has welcomed the recent clarification by the President of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on the purported termination of the national teams' sponsorship partnership between the two organisations.

Okon Iyanam, Globacom's Executive Director, Marketing Communications said while the company was most pleased to read the clarification by the NFF President, Alhaji Sani Lulu Abdullahi last Friday in Lagos on the matter, it will firmly pursue stricter fulfilment of all benefits due it in the contract, going forward.

"The purported termination of our sponsorship contract was a most unusual and surprising development considering that the company had all along fulfilled all aspects of its obligation under the contract in addition to committing huge resources and goodwill to the development and promotion of football in Nigeria, Iyanam remarked adding, "but we chose not to join issues as those statements were credited to junior officers of the federation who may not have been availed of the full details of the contract and because we at Globacom, believe that the bigger interest of Nigerian football rates higher than any individual considerations, moreso, as we had not received any such letter of termination"

Iyanam further explained that Globacom had in the last few months quietly pursued a peaceful resolution of observed breaches in the implementation of the contract by the NFF.

He averred that payment of the N150m sponsorship fee was never the issue as Globacom has over the years funded activities of the NFF even outside its obligations in the contract. "Globacom has demonstrated an interest in the affairs of Nigerian football beyond what we are obligated to in the contract and as a proudly Nigerian company, we will continue to partner with relevant organisations towards taking the game to greater heights", Iyanam assured.

The Globacom official also appealed to the NFF to reciprocate the recent gesture of the company by ensuring that the training kits and leisure wears of Nigerian football teams at the Olympic are appropriately branded.
