Zambia: Katongo Hoping to Give Fernandez A Boost

After three stringent medical tests, former Jomo Cosmos hitman Christopher Katongo yesterday joined Rowen Fernandez and Siyabonga Nkosi at Arminia Bielefeld.

The Zambian international who has signed a three-year deal with the Bundesliga outfit was presented to the German press yesterday before participating in his first training session.

Katongo, who will wear the number 10 jersey, told the gathering that he was a team player and that "football is about working together".

The former PSL top scorer is already extremely fit as he joins Bielefeld from Denmark's Brondby IF, where their league has been running for several weeks.

Described to the media as an extremely aggressive player, Katongo said joining Bielefeld was part of his dream as he would now be playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world.

The father of two small sons says his family will be joining him in Germany shortly.

He closed off the interview by giving Fernandez a wink and said: "I hope my arrival here will lift up my old friends."

Earlier reports stated that the deal between the Germans and the Danish outfit was worth only 1,5- million Euros (about R18-million) even though he cost the Danes 2-million Euros (about R24-million).

Katongo has been at Brondy ever since leaving Ezenkosi 18 months ago, but has not reached the heights he achieved while playing South Africa. He netted five times in 27 games.
