Sokoto — The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Mohammad Sa'ad Abubakar, and the Jama'atu Nasirl Islam (JNI) have been commended for their role in the eradication of polio in the country.

This commendation was made by the Interim Chairman, Journalists Against Polio and For Immunization (JAP), Mr. Kunle Sani, while speaking at an interactive meeting on the role journalists in polio interruption have been playing in Sokoto.

He explained that Journalists Against polio and For Immunization is a non religious, non governmental and non political organization with the aim of participating in the fight against polio in the society through positive reporting and sensitization of the public on immunization against poliomyelitis and other child killer diseases that have become major causes of infant mortality in the country.

The interim chairman stressed also that the diseases are the primary causes of deformity among children, saying that they often occur largely due to non-compliance or rejection of the vaccine, adding that it's disheartening to note that Nigeria harbours 48 percent of the total number of polio cases in the world.

Mr. Sani, while commending the sultan and other religious leaders and stakeholders in the country, noted that at the peak of the polio controversy, they made several presentations and activities to prove that the vaccines are not harmful as erroneously perceived, stressing that the contributions of the World Health Organization (WHO) and other developmental partners need also be appreciated.
