Ghana: National Service Marks Week in Volta

Ho — The Executive Director of the National Service Scheme, Mr. Obiri Yeboah, has noted that service personnel have a vital role to play, in ensuring the sustenance of democracy in the country.

He said the country had experienced several unconstitutional change of governments, which to him, was an indication that all was not well in the democratic governance, hence the need to strengthen democracy.

Mr. Yeboah was speaking at a thanksgiving service and presentation of certificates, in Ho, to mark the week-long celebration of the National Service Week.

The thanksgiving service was themed: "O give thanks unto the Lord for He is good: His mercy endureth forever."

Mr. Yeboah observed that service personnel were found in every part of the country, hence it was incumbent on them to educate the people in the various communities, that they found themselves, on issues that would consolidate the democratic dispensation of the country.

He stressed that service personnel had the responsibility to educate the populace, to enable them make informed choices and decisions.

Mr. Yeboah said service personnel should work hard towards building trust in politics, which he pointed out, was vital in enhancing the effectiveness and prestige of democracy. He advised them to do this, by disseminating government policies, as well as programmes, in the communities that they work.

He noted that there are people whose main agenda is to retard the development of the country and charged the service personnel to counter such falsehoods.

The Board Chairman of the National Service Scheme, Prof. Kwesi Agyeman, on his part, asked the youth to lead righteous lives and be disciplined.

The Volta Regional Director of the National Service Scheme, Mr. Ken Gyemfi, commended the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) for the support being given to service personnel in the region.

Mr. Gyemfi disclosed that in the 2007 and 2008, two thousand and one service personnel were posted to the Volta Region.

The Regional Director cautioned against the writing of anonymous letters, and the making of what he called "unnecessary telephone calls," against heads of department.

Mr. Gyemfi assured the management of the scheme that no amount of allegations, vilifications, undermining and character assassination, as well as the pull him down attitude, would discourage the staff from working hard to ensure the growth of the scheme in the region.
