Ghana seeking re-election to Postal Operations Council - Aggrey Ntim The Minister of Communications, Dr. Benjamin Aggrey Ntim, has commended Switzerland for hosting the 24th Congress of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which has the objective of developing regulations, policies and strategies to promote sustainable growth in the postal industry, in an era of information society
He said the Universal Postal Union (UPU), as an Inter-governmental Organization, deserved commendation for exhibiting commitment towards participatory transformation of the postal industry.
He said guided therefore by the "Nairobi Postal Strategy, we must strive to use our collective and committed presence here, to positively respond to the industry challenges and the postal needs, to the society at large."
Dr. Benjamin Aggrey Ntim delivered a statement at the plenary session of the on-going 24th Universal Postal Union (UPU) Congress.
The Minister noted that this year's congress, was a very important one, considering the fact that the postal industry today, has become highly diversified to the extent that it defies easy categorization, as it spans many major markets sectors, such as mail, express, parcels, retail, banking, financial services, and logistics supply in a globalized environment, with its attendant market liberalization, competition and commercialization.
He explained that there obviously can be no world without postal services, and so what we should aim at achieving here, is a right policy mix, to ensure that the post continues to serve our people, especially those in the rural areas, who lack basic access to information.
Dr. Aggrey Ntim emphasized that the challenges confronting the industry, certainly called for technological innovativeness in the transformation of business models, product designs, and systems for networking.
Of the power of technology in transformation process, he said "let us be mindful of the challenges we need to surmount, to manage enormous organizational culture change, so the human resources would cope with new technological and socio-economic changes of the industry."
Continuing, he further said, "we can accomplish this, only when we ensure that we will develop regulations, that promote high quality of service standard within our respective countries and internationally."
He pointed out that there was also the need to have impact on the delivery of services, by the human interface to the sustenance of customer satisfaction.
On the enabling regulatory front, the Minister urge all postal administrations, particularly in the developing economies, to take interest in the developing of legislations, which will support E-commerce, as these laws will be the future supportive legislation, that will transform the postal parcels delivery systems in this era of ICT.
The Minister informed the congress that since joining the UPU in 1957, Ghana has supported the UPU goal of collaborative policy development, and it was for this reason that Ghana was seeking to be re-elected to the postal operations council, and that Ghana would count on the support of all, to enable us to further serve this dynamic Union.
