The Tamale Division, of the National Service Personnel Association (NASPA), yesterday launched its 2008 week celebration, with a call on tertiary institution graduates, to cultivate the habit of establishing their own jobs, instead of continual dependence on government for jobs.
Mohammed Amin Adam Anta, Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), said this in his keynote address, saying service personnel must believe in themselves, and adopt the can do spirit or attitude, that would spur them to become entrepreneurs, but not to rely on government alone to provide jobs.
According to him, the National Service Secretariat had gone through many challenges, which had now been taken up by the government for redress.
Mr. Amin Anta noted that the Board of the Service would be introducing initiatives, which include the training of service personnel, to work and do things on their own.
He also asserted that the National Volunteer Service Programme was not an ad hoc or temporary programme, but a permanent one, that would continue to exist, and run side-by-side with the National Service Programme.
The MCE stressed that the Ghana Education Service (GES) was now loosing its responsibility of recruiting, and maintaining teachers to teach in its schools, because the National Service Programme rolls out about 70 per cent of its personnel each year, to fill vacancies in the GES.
He declared that the time had come for the GES to pay some amount of money to the National Service Secretariat, as an appreciation for the services offered.
In his welcome address, the Tamale Metropolitan Director of the National Service Programme, Mr. Charles Buabeng explained that the main objective of the programme was to whip up the spirit of national service among the youth of Ghana, and to enlist the active support of all segments of the Ghanaian society, in the effort of national reconciliation.
