Ghana: Government Donates 22 Buses to 22 Senior High Schools in Region

Alfred Adam, Zam Samin

5 August 2008

The GOVERNMENT has donated 22 brand new Eicher buses, to 22 senior high schools in the region.

The 74 and 34 seater capacity buses were presented to district chief executives (DCEs), of the various districts assemblies, which benefited from the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports and Ghana Education Service (GES) allocation of the vehicles.

Presenting the buses to the beneficiary schools, through the DCEs , the Western Regional Minister, Anthony Evans Amoah, noted that the current administration, led by his Excellency John Agyekum Kufuor, was not only a listening government, but an administration that has lived up to expectations.

According to him, most of the promises made by the government, in the education and other sectors of the economy, within the last seven years, when they came into power, have been fulfilled.

The reason for the donation of the 22 buses, he noted, was an attempt to improve the education sector, especially teaching and learning at the senior high school level. "We want to improve education in this country and improve the teaching and learning at the various senior high schools," Mr. Amoah stated.

The donation, according to the Minister, was to further motivate the schools, to improve on their performance academically. Mr. A. E. Amoah has meanwhile, called on all the school authorities in the districts, that have benefited, to discard the idea of considering the buses as government properties.

Good maintenance coupled with proper supervision, he said, were the guiding principles they could use to keep the buses in good shape.

Mr. Amoah tasked the DCEs of the 22 districts, to effectively monitor the use of the buses.

He said as chairmen of the oversight committees, of the various schools, it was their prime responsibility, to make sure that the buses were put to good use, in order to satisfy the purpose for which they were donated.

Some of the secondary schools in the other districts, such as Juaboso, Asawinso and Akontombra, which did not benefit from the current donation, were asked by the Minister to exercise patience, while government makes strides to get theirs at the appropriate time.

On their part, the DCEs and the headmasters of the beneficiary schools thanked the government for delivering on the promises made to them.

They described the donation as timely, because of the transport difficulties some of them were facing.
