The Vice President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya has donated one tonne of the improved Nerica V Upland rice variety to Iriiri Sub-county in Bokora County, declaring, "we shall fight together to end hunger and poverty in Karamoja".

"These rice seeds alone are not enough, Naads must use some of its money to buy more seeds for the people who need them, since they have expressed a strong desire to get involved in agriculture," Prof. Bukenya said following overwhelming demand for more rice seeds from youth and women who had already opened up their grounds for the planting season and were awaiting his arrival.

Prof. Bukenya whose convoy got stuck several times on the Moroto-Katakwi road, walked the last kilometer of the trip to Iriiri by foot to various maize and sorghum gardens said it was time for Karamoja to feed itself and supply the excess to the rest of the country.

He also advocated the introduction of exotic bulls to the region to improve the livestock breed for both milk and meat production. Prof. Bukenya on a two- week tour of the Karamoja sub-region to popularise governments' prosperity for all programme has dubbed his anti-poverty mobilisation tour "I believe Karamoja can feed Uganda.

He said the people of Karamoja need to be mobilised to engage in profitable enterprises. Iriiri sub-county is one of Naads' pilot sub-counties.
