Vice-President, Rupiah Banda, has said there is no need to start debating salary increments for constitutional office holders before the matter goes to Parliament.
Mr Banda said the Government had not even announced the new emoluments for these office holders, including ministers and their deputies and advised people to wait until the matter was tabled in Parliament.
Speaking before departure for Lusaka at Livingstone International Airport yesterday, Mr Banda said Cabinet ministers and other senior Government officials had not received any new emoluments.
"We have not received anything and the Government has not even announced any new increments to warrant such debate, let us wait until the matter gets to Parliament," he said.
Mr Banda also assured that a lasting solution to the problems at the University of Zambia (Unza) would be resolved as the Government would soon meet the Unza management to try and discuss the problems at the institution.
He said that with support from the ruling party he had managed to provide leadership to the nation in the absence of President Mwanawasa.
Speaking when he met newly elected MMD Livingstone constituency executive committee officials at the airport, Mr Banda said the party officials had a responsibility to show leadership in Zambia, especially that the President was not in the country.
He said the ruling party had played an important role in maintaining the current stability in Zambia, hence the need for MMD officials to be active and responsive.
He also stressed that MMD in the Southern Province was very important because it was in a region dominated by the United Party for National Development (UPND).
Mr Banda, who travelled to Livingstone on Sunday to grace the Lwiindi
ceremony at the Mukuni Palace, was also pleased with the traditional event, which brought together several chiefs from within Zambia and abroad.
He flew back to Lusaka at 15:45hours and was seen off by senior Government officials.
