Nigeria: Federal Palace Hotel Shelves Sack of 400 Workers

Following the intervention of Hotel and Personal Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (HAPSSSA), the management of Tourist Company of Nigeria Plc, owners of Federal Palace Hotel (FPH) at the weekend shelved its plan to sack about 400 workers.

The decision to put the plan on hold was sequel to truce struck between representatives of the company, HAPSSA executives and the National Union of Hotel and Personal Service Workers (NUHPSW) at a meeting held in Lagos on July 30.

A communique signed by Olawale Makinde, Chief Operating Officer, Eddie Chukwura and Andy Akporugo Jr, counsel on behalf of Tourist Company of Nigeria Plc, Comrade Dele Dada, General Secretary of HAPSSSA, Augustine Mbavough, General Secretary of NUHPSW and 10 others on behalf of workers said both parties agreed on the continous employment of workers pending the period the Tourist Company of Nigeria Plc would pay all workers their terminal benefits in phases, in accordance with existing conditions of service, provided that the last phase will not exceed one year from the date of signing this communique".

The FPH management and workers also agreed that the calculation of accruable gratuity shall be fixed to terminate on July 31.

It was also resolved that the issue of whether redundancy accrues or not shall be referred an arbiter for determination.

While it was further resolved that the present conditions service shall continue to apply in relation to the terms of employment, no worker, according to the communique, shall be victimized on account of the event leading to the successful resolution of the matter.

Daily Champion, had on July 30, 2008 excusively reported plans by FPH to sack it's 400 workforce, who are predominantly Nigerians.

As at the time of the report, their sack letters were ready for distribution to affected staff, even though management has conveyed to workers that they want to "close down business".
