Osogbo — In line with the International Year of Sanitation in the country, the Osun State Government has mapped out strategies to combat factors militating against improved environment sanitation in the state.
Speaking with THISDAY exclusively, the State Commissioner of Environment Alhaji Ademola Adio Kazeem noted that to make the strategies work, awareness and proper education would be mounted to assist in eradicating the environmental problem.
He noted that in as much as the State Government is committed to the development of improved sanitisation exercise in the state, all stakeholders would be mobilised to create interest in the cleanliness of their environment.
Kazeem said with the recent action plan by the government, waste management would be handled properly so that it can boost the state's revenue. The Commissioner emphasised that "waste to wealth" would be carried out, and a permanent solution would be sought.
He disclosed that the Osun Government will partner with the Federal Government on the integrated waste management, thereby establishing private/public sector partnership to take care of the waste management scenario in the state.
Kazeem opined that conversion of waste to wealth would greatly assist government in the generation of internally revenue.
Speaking on the management of the forestry in the state, the commissioner said forestry would be made to work in line with the recent review law of the state forestry; and maintained that the law guiding the forestry activities in the state would be made to be corrective ones, rather than punitive measures.
The Commissioner further stressed that the State Government had equally enacted law on the issues of the burning of bush and deforestation-pollution in the State.
On economical problems, the commissioner pointed out that the State would partner with the Federal Government to assist it (Osun) on the menace of erosion particularly in the areas that are erosion-prone. He maintained that the State would work towards ensuring that adequate sanitisation is achieved.
