Namibia: People With Disabilities Excel in Sport

6 August 2008

THE promoter of sports for people with disabilities, Michael Hamukwaya, has described the Oshana Heroes Sport Club's regional event held at Oshakati last Saturday as a success.

Hamukwaya this week said all participants were serious and fully participated in their respective sports codes.

He explained that the event was aimed at strengthening the participation of people with disabilities in sporting activities, as well as to select potential players for national games.

"We are taking part in this tournament because we want to clearly demonstrate that we, the people with disabilities, can also excel in sports like other people," Ndapewa Petrus, one of the participants, noted.

The number of sports clubs of people with disabilities from the regions of Omusati, Erongo, Khomas, Kavango and the host Oshana region took part in the tournament.

Athletics (100m, 200m, shot put, javelin and discus), football and basketball were the sports codes that featured in the tournament.

Consulting Services Africa of Evat Kandongo remains the main sponsor of the event, with additional support from the Ongwediva-based Afika Stadt Haus Hotel and the Namibian College of Open Learning (Namcol).

"About 160 people with disabilities took part in the tournament, and the potential is there.

We only need people with sports techniques to develop the potential that people with disabilities are blessed with," Hamukwaya said.
